Welcome to Weird
Welcome to Weird
The beautiful game. The weirdest league. Beyond soccer, the Avery Dennison Toffee League is a social club. It’s the place where Portland’s creatives swap the agency pitch for the soccer pitch. And where sport collides with style, fun and eccentricity.
Unusually, it’s a league where cool, customized kits matter as much as the final score. And where bespoke badges show off each team’s true personality. Made up of passionate amateurs, the Toffee League celebrates the artistic side of soccer. Yes it’s competitive, but it’s about community and creativity.
Team Identity, Creative Integrity
Clearly, when a collective of creatives get on the pitch, it’s important to look good. So each team set about carefully creating their own stylised crest to adorn their jerseys. No bog-standard badges here, instead each crest became a badge of creative honor. The quirkier the better. The weirder, the more wonderful.
The badges were then carefully produced by Avery Dennison to optimize the color, texture and definition using advanced weaving and printing techniques.
So the British-born Fish and Chips FC crest shows a footballing fish in shades. Its sculpted levels of gold embroidery help bring the badge to life. The Jnr Juniors crest nods to the ‘90s with it’s checked patterns and box-busting font. Their woven heat seal badge features gradient effects on bright colors, created using an iridescent double shuttle loom.
And for the Netrippers FC, leaders in the Portland LGBT community, a badge woven with embroidery and satin stitch edging that features their signature rose. The look may be delicate, but the team not so much.
These badges bring the teams together, and the Toffee League brings the teams together. It’s become a community of like-minded creatives who love to compete and play football each weekend. It’s a space to share passions and come together, on and off the pitch.
Customized Kits and Crests
Now in its third season, the league began in 2016 at The Toffee Club in Portland. Avery Dennison teamed up with this British themed bar due to a shared love of the beautiful game.
Our customization lab opened throughout the 2018 tournament in an exclusive area of the venue. Guests from some of the world’s leading apparel and footwear brands came to create custom kits. And each kit was adorned with an exclusively designed badge, provided by Avery Dennison. In total, our creative team produced 26 custom-made crests for the Toffee League teams.
Below are a selection of creative badge designs:

Passing It On
The Avery Dennison Toffee League is about more than games and goals. It’s about community, even when the soccer stops and the final scores come in. That’s why our official ball sponsor for the 2018 league was PARK Social Soccer Co. They’re a socially conscious soccer brand that helps support disadvantaged children. Through their Pass-A-Ball project, for every ball they sell they pass one on to a child in need. So far PARK has passed over 4,500 balls to kids in need across 11 countries and counting.
Beyond the Final Whistle
The Toffee League teams are creatives, artists and artisans, but above all - lovers of the game. They’re united in their creativity, eccentricity and uniquely Portland outlook on life. It’s a tournament full of fun and friendship, played by amateurs who live, think and work outside the box. And it’s a weirder world we’re proud to be part of.
